RAY GAWLAK: About the Artist
Ray Gawlak's photography career began after graduating Meriden High School in 1958. He was active as a photographer and editor of the yearbook and newspaper in his junior and senior years. He gained valuable experience working for a New Haven studio and a camera store in Meriden.
After graduating from Southern Connecticut State University in 1962, Ray taught 6th and 7th grade science before opening his first studio in 1968. He has exhibited in numerous locales such as libraries, galleries, and the Phoenix Mutual headquarters in Hartford. He has been awarded prizes for entries in professional organizations and art competitions, including first prize for photography at the Pomperaug Woods Art of Experience Juried Art Show in 2015. Throughout his career, Ray has done extensive sports, wedding, and portrait work. He specializes in outdoor and location portraiture, which he believes allows subjects to feel more at ease during the session as well as presenting a greater variety of lighting and posing opportunities. His extensive travels throughout the US, Europe, New Zealand, and Ecuador, have resulted in an amazing catalog of images Ray and his wife Janet celebrated their 57th anniversary in June and have two sons, Jason and Eric, and two grandchildren, Russell and Mia. Daughters-in-law Lisa and Jennifer have added much happiness to the family. |
