JUDGE'S STATEMENT
Being asked to juror Gallery 53's Fall Art Exhibit was an honor. I was pleased to see so many works of art and so many talented artists participating. My overall impression of the show was "Color" and "Expression." I am happy to see so much color and expression coming back into art. I take this as a sign that we are resilient. No matter the state of the nation, the world, COVID, or personal issues, people are overwhelming turning to art to express themselves.
As a juror, it is always a difficult task to be asked to select "winners" as there are so many outstanding artworks in this show. The artworks I have chosen from this show are works that caught my eye and spoke to me from a unique and profound place. I look for art that expresses a visual language and listen to each work's unique voice. And I can tell you there is a lot of conversation going on in this room! It was a real pleasure to be part of the show. - Kate Henderson |
ABOUT KATE HENDERSON
Kate Henderson is an award-winning artist who explores the interplay between nature and intellect—inspired by the idea that memories are not static but constantly evolving and reshaping themselves over time. She captures the essence of these fleeting moments through a visual language that is both personal and universal. By using a combination of gestural lines and abstract shapes, Kate translates elements of the natural world into a place of imagined passages and narratives.
Kate is a member and former Director of Kehler Liddell Gallery in New Haven, CT. She teaches printmaking, color theory, and photography at Paier College, printmaking at Creative Arts Workshop and painting and pastel workshops throughout New England. She received her MFA at Yale University and her BA/BFA degrees at Indiana University in art history and painting & printmaking. She specialized in materials and techniques while at Yale with Bernard Chaet. Her work has been shown at Creative Tech Week NY, The Lumen Prize, Auditorium on Broadway NY, Degas Society in New Orleans, Ridgefield Camera Works, Schelfhaudt Gallery, Ethel Walker School, Kershner Gallery, and Yale Medical School, among others.
