JUDGE'S COMMENTS
Dyed by Eddie Hall is stunning. The beautiful color palette, the rhythm, patterns and how the eye is directed to the center area is sophisticated. Each decision the artist made, including how to finish the frame and keep the window hardware, added to the overall visual experience.
FIRST PLACE
Susan Hammar Memorial Award Splish by Marian Gansley JUDGE'S COMMENTS
Splish by Marian Gansley is a great example of energy, vibrancy and a bit of playfulness. How the artist chose to frame the work was also unique and added to the interest of the work. |
SECOND PLACE
Water Dance by Laura LeClair JUDGE'S COMMENTS
Water Dance by Laura LeClair is beautiful and ethereal. The movement and lines guide the viewer through an experience and gives a pathway in and out of the work. |
THIRD PLACE
Spaces & Places II by John Connelly JUDGE'S COMMENTS
Spaces & Places II by John Connelly is, at first glance, seemingly simple. But, when examined more closely, the artist's decisions for where to place angles and shapes, is intriguing. |

JUDGE'S STATEMENT
It was an honor to jury the 2023 Abstract Art show at Gallery 53. The show is lively, inviting and engaging. As a juror, I look for overall visual interest, technical mastery and how the work is presented. Visual interest includes how the eye moves around the piece, rhythm and differences. Technical prowess means the artist demonstrated skill in principles of value, color, composition and shape to create an engaging visual experience. Another important aspect is the care and attention the artist took to finish and display their work. Congratulations to all participants and the winners!
