Georgia On My Mind
"Georgia On My Mind" is a commanding oil painting by Connecticut artist Gina Dunlap. Winner of the Bernice Moore Best in Show Award in Gallery 53's 97th Annual Fall Art Show, the piece is framed in a deep walnut wood frame with black edging. Juror Karen Israel described the painting as follows: There is so much drama in this sharp profile. On further inspection, I was drawn in by the warm flesh tones and the skin's texture. There is a sculptural quality to this portrait and I felt I could place my hands on her head and my hands alone would know what this woman looks like. The artist captured a person who has a sense of knowing and a mystery to her. The artist made me want to know what this woman's story/history was all about. Leaving the lower left as a lost and found area forced me to keep on her. The very light headdress was simply rendered and this too, kept to a powerful statement of design and emotion."
